The total number of active coronavirus cases in India crossed the 4.5 lakh mark for the first time after nine days on Thursday, when 43,082 new COVID-19 infections were recorded, government data shows. With this, India’s total Covid cases have risen to 93,09,787. Up to 492 people also died of the highly infectious disease in the last 24 hours taking the overall Covid-related death count to 1,35,715. Total discharged cases rose to 87,18,517 with 39,379 new discharges in this period.
The rise in active COVID-19 cases comes amid apprehensions of a second wave nationally as infection rate has spiked in states with relatively fewer cases till now, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh. Many states have adopted localised restrictions, including night curfews, and doubled fines for not wearing masks and crowding.

Coronavirus news: Moscow’s death count from COVID-19 rises by 76 over past day to 8,756
Moscow has registered 76 deaths of patients infected with COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing the Russian capital’s death count to 8,756, the city’s coronavirus response center said in a statement on Friday.
“Another 76 patients, who were diagnosed with pneumonia and tested positive for the coronavirus infection, died in Moscow,” the center said.
In the previous day, 77 people infected with the coronavirus died in Moscow, ANI reported.
Coronavirus news: Delhi reports 98 COVID deaths, 5,482 new cases
Delhi recorded 5,482 fresh COVID-19 cases in a day, while 98 more fatalities linked to the disease pushed the city’s death count to 8,909 on Friday, authorities said.
According to a bulletin issued by the Delhi Health Department on Friday, the total number of coronavirus cases climbed to 5,56,744 on Friday, of which 5,09,654 have recovered. The tally of active cases in Delhi was 38,181 down from 38,734 on Thursday.
The positivity rate was 8.51 per cent. It was 8.65 per cent on Thursday and 8.49 per cent on Wednesday, PTI reported.
Assam reports 149 new Covid cases
Assam’s COVID-19 death count rose to 980 after two more persons died due to the disease on Friday, while 149 new positive cases took the tally to 2,12,320, Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Altogether 160 patients were cured of the disease and released from various hospitals during the day, pushing the number of recovered people to 2,08,065. The current recovery rate in the state is 97.99 per cent.

Delhi records 98 COVID deaths, 5,482 cases
Delhi recorded 5,482 fresh COVID-19 cases on Friday, while 98 more fatalities pushed the death count in the city to 8,909, the authorities said. The positivity rate was 8.51 percent. It was 8.65 percent on Thursday and 8.49 percent on Wednesday.
As many as 64,455 tests, including 28,100 RT-PCR tests and 36,355 rapid antigen tests, were conducted the previous day for detection of the novel coronavirus disease, said a bulletin issued by the Delhi health department on Friday.
28 more deaths, 812 new cases in Punjab
Twenty-eight more people died due to coronavirus in Punjab on Friday, pushing the death count to 4,737, while 812 new cases took the infection count in the state to 1,50,086.
There are 7,719 active COVID-19 cases in the state as of now, a health department bulletin said.
A total of 541 coronavirus patients were discharged after recovering from the infection, taking the number of cured persons to 1,37,630, as per the bulletin.
Goa’s COVID-19 count rises to 47,491
Goa’s coronavirus caseload went up by 150 and reached 47,491 on Friday, while the count increased by one to touch 686, an official said. The number of people who have recovered reached 45,492 after 152 people were discharged during the day, leaving the state with 1,313 active cases, he added.

Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality hospital identified as Delhi’s first vaccine storage facility
The Delhi government-run Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital has been identified as the city’s first storage facility for COVID-19 vaccine.
BL Sherwal, the managing director of the hospital, said a team from the Union Health Ministry has surveyed the building and approved it.
“The Delhi government had asked us to provide space to store vaccines. We have a three-storeyed building which can be used for this purpose. It has around 8,000 metre square area where vaccines can be stored,” Mr Sherwal said.
He said: “Some work needs to be done to convert it into a cold storage facility. The doors need to be enlarged to ensure entry of deep freezers. More power points will be needed.”
Maharashtra Covid cases rise to 18,08,550
Maharashtra’s COVID-19 case tally has reached 18,08,550 as 6,185 fresh infections were recorded, said a health official.
The state also reported 85 deaths during the day, taking the COVID-19 death count to 46,898, he said.
Meanwhile, 4,089 patients were discharged from hospitals after treatment, taking the tally of recovered patients to 16,72,627. There are now 87,969 active coronavirus patients in Maharashtra.
Maharashtra extends lockdown restrictions till end of year
The Maharashtra government has extended the lockdown on account of coronavirus in the state till the midnight of December 31, an official release said.
In the last couple of months, the government has eased several lockdown restrictions.
Revised guidelines have been issued from time to time by, allowing resumption of various activities as part of the “Mission Begin Again”, the release said.
Tripura COVID-19 case count rises to 32,610
At least 32 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura, pushing the state’s tally to 32,610, a health department official said. Altogether 367 people have died due to the infection. West Tripura district, of which state capital Agartala is a part, has accounted for 185 of the 367 COVID-19 deaths.
Tripura currently has 744 active coronavirus cases, while 31,476 people have recovered from the disease.
States need to rise above politics and take measures to contain Covid: Top Court
The Supreme Court said states have to rise “above the politics” and harsh measures were required to be taken to contain the surge of COVID-19 as things have gone from “bad to worse”.
The top court also said there are policies, guidelines and standard operating procedures (SoP) for COVID-19 management in the country but there is lack of implementation by the authorities and no concrete steps have been taken to deal with the issue.
The top court said “this is high time to take strict measures”, otherwise Central government’s effort will go in vain.
Odisha’s COVID-19 count rise to 3,17,239
Odisha reported 594 new cases of COVID-19, taking the total tally of cases in the state to 3,17,239. The total number of Coronavirus cases in the state include 3,08,839 recoveries and 6,629 active cases. Fourteen patients died due to the virus on Thursday, according to the Health Department of Odisha.

Coronavirus: Mizoram’s COVID-19 Tally Rises To 3,788
Twenty-three more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Mizoram on Friday, pushing the state’s coronavirus tally to 3,788, an official said. Of the 23 new cases, nine were reported in Lawngtlai district, 4 each from Aizawl and Champhai, Lunglei (3), Kolasib (2) and Serchhip (1), the official said. AstraZeneca Plc is likely to conduct an additional global trial to assess the efficacy of its Covid-19 vaccine, according to the company’s chief executive officer, after current studies raised questions over its level of protection. The new trial would be run instead of adding an arm to an ongoing US trial and would evaluate a lower dosage that performed better than a full amount in Astra’s studies. India Had Estimated 74 Million Covid Cases by August: Report

Delhi High Court on Thursday said that it is now for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) to take a call as to whether night curfew is required to be imposed in the city or some of its parts or other measures need to be adopted to contain COVID-19.
