US conducting ‘serious’ investigations into China’s response to outbreak

Coronavirus, US Deaths: There have been more than 55,000 coronavirus-related deaths in the United States and the pandemic has shut down huge swathes of the economy, leaving tens of millions unemployed.

US President Donald Trump has said China could have stopped the coronavirus before it swept the globe and said his administration was conducting “serious investigations” into what happened.

“We’re doing very serious investigations … We are not happy with China,” Mr Trump said at a White House news conference. “There are a lot of ways you can hold them accountable.”

In the UK, meanwhile, Boris Johnson has promised to “fire up the engines” of the economy with a plan for “refining” the coronavirus lockdown, which he will reveal by the end of the week.

The number of Germany’s confirmed cases increased by 1,144 to 156,337, data from the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases showed on Tuesday.

The death toll rose by 163 to 5,913, according to the tally.
